This Owens Mat Utopian vase stands proudly at 11" high by 4.5" in diameter, tapering to 1.75" at the rim, and 3.5" at the base. It has a rather statuesque form, with a tapered rim. This vase was decorated by Mr. Tot Steele, who worked at a number of Zanesville potteries, including Owens Pottery. Steele's artwork is prized by collectors for his execution and precision in design, a finely skilled craftsman. He decorated this vase with a single Poppy blossom with leaves, a handsome presentation. This vase is glazed in Owens signature Mat Utopian glaze colors, in a nice blue and light terra cotta brown glaze combination, with a greenish hue in the blue. The blossom and leaves are painted in thick slip in a very complementary palette. This vase is marked with the name Owens and the shape number 111 followed by a '9' or perhaps a 'g', indicating size. It is guaranteed to be vintage Owens Pottery from the early 1900s. It bears Steele's cojoined initials 'T/S' on the lower base edge in slip. This vase is in factory original condition, with the usual mold lines, but no apologies. It makes a very handsome presentation.
