This scarce and very handsome trial-like set of Muncie Pottery Owl bookends stand 6" high by 6.5" across by 2" wide. The usual #257 set measures 5.25" high by 6.25" across by 1.75" wide, slightly smaller. The reason is that this set was made using the #250 bookend base, which is a fuller platform. They have a wonderfully angular flattish broad plinth form, embossed with highly stylized Owls with wings at the ready in high relief. Best of all, they are glazed in a very organic peppered oyster glaze, which thins at the high points allowing the underglaze clay color peek through, a very nice glaze effect, which lays on this set beautifully. The glaze is uniformly peppered and there is a stray fleck of an aqua glaze in the making. The design is stunning in its presentation, which has a 'pick-me-up' attitude that is hard to resist. Muncie Pottery produced few bookend forms, and this obvious trial or experimental set is awesome in its design and presentation. This set is marked with a special mark on the undersides, which I cannot find in any reference, but likely a trial mark. This set is guaranteed to be vintage Muncie Pottery c1930, and likely an earlier production. One can assume Muncie changed the initial #250 platform out for the more sleek #257 platform. This 'Wise Owl' bookend set is in excellent condition, with a couple of glaze flecks, and a clay tag on the backside, along with the usual glaze anomolies.. This set makes a very handsome Art Deco presentation. If you collect Muncie Pottery, you just found a keeper!
