This handsome Otto & Vivika Heino weed vase stands 2.5" high by 5" across by 1" wide. It has a flattened quasi-rectangular form with five small holes in the domed top for holding weeds, and four teensy tiny holes in the base, likely to allow for drying the clay before firing. It is a weed pot, so it was meant to hold dry weeds, not water. Weed pots had a very different purpose back in the mid-century period, a weed pot today connotes an entirely different thing. Best of all, this weed pot is decorated with two stylized owls on the front of the vessel. Otto & Vivika Heino were giants in the world of studio art pottery. They were, mid-century modernists, who made pots in New Hampshire and later in California. Vivika held numerous teaching positions in the field of ceramics, and both she and Otto produced pots for most all of their adults lives. They were very involved in the studio art pottery movement early on and were clearly movers and shakers in their field. This vessel is a stoneware pot, hand built of red clay, and glazed in an oyster and rust glaze combination, a signature glaze for many of their pots. This weed pot is marked with the short impressed logo that reads 'V&O' on the base, for Vivika & Otto, a little hard to read, however, under a loupe, I can see the 'V', '&' and 'O', and guaranteed to be a vintage MCM Heino vessel. It is in studio original condition, no apologies. This weed pot is a pleasing form and a classic example of the Heinos' mid-century vessels, one better than the next, so much talent. If you appreciate their work, this vessel will make you smile, I guarantee it!
