This very handsome Rookwood Mat 'Owl' mug stands 4.5" high by 6" across the handle by 4" in diameter, tapering to 3" at the rim opening. It has a great form in the shape of an owl, with acorn and oak leaf accents and a branch handle, a very nice mug. This vessel is glazed in a handsome mat brown glaze. This hoot owl is a design by William McDonald, whose tenure at Rookwood Pottery was from 1882 to 1931. This mug is well marked with the Rookwood logo, and dated 1909 in Roman Numerals, along with its shape number 1171, and an unusual inverted chevron mark with a series of impressed lines. This 'night scholar' is in excellent condition, with a very good restoration to a small nick on one of his talons, which presents beautifully. If you like Rookwood's early mat glazes, this is a very handsome example.
