This Rookwood Standard Yellow Glaze vase stands rather proudly at 12" high by 5" in diameter, tapering at the neckline to a 4" diameter flared and loosely ruffled rim. It has a very early and statuesque form, shape 216, designed by William Auckland. According to Peck, this vessel is hand-thrown. It was decorated by Ms. Laura Ann Fry, whose tenure at the Rookwood Pottery was from 1881-1887. She decorated this vessel with exquisitely executed Apple Blossoms and leaves in exacting precision. The glaze colors are gorgeous in a light yellow standard glaze, simply beautiful. This beauty is well marked and dated with the well-known Rookwood logo, dating this vase to1886, with no flame above, so the very first year this logo was introduced. Fry's initials/cipher 'LAF' are noted on the base, along with the Rookwood logo and shape number 216. There is a 'W', indicating a white clay body. This shapely vessel is in amazingly original factory condition, with a couple of factory original clay threads on the lower body of the vase and just minimal wear from handling. We show a minor rub to the glaze in a close-up photo for the sake of accuracy, it does not detract in the least from this vessel. The shadows in the photos are from camera glare, the glaze finish is very bright and uniform. This very large and impressive vase decorated by Ms. Fry makes a stunningly beautiful presentation!
